Preparing Your Dog for Their First Walk With a New Walker
A great first walk sets the tone for a long, happy relationship. A little preparation helps your dog feel safe and gives your walker everything they need.
1. Do a meet-and-greet
Invite the walker over for 15 minutes while you're home. Let your dog sniff and approach in their own time. Walk around the block together so your dog sees you trust this new person.
2. Check the gear
- A well-fitted harness or collar — you should fit two fingers underneath, no more.
- A standard 4–6 ft leash (retractable leashes make it harder to keep control).
- Up-to-date ID tag with your phone number.
- Poop bags, and treats your dog loves.
3. Write a one-page care sheet
Include your dog's routine, cues they know, triggers (bikes, other dogs, loud trucks), any medical needs, your vet's details and an emergency contact. On FindDogWalker you can add notes to each dog's profile and to every booking.
4. Sort out access
Agree on how the walker gets in: a lockbox, a spare key or a smart lock code. Never label keys with your address. Share alarm instructions privately in messages.
5. Keep the first walk short
A 20–30 minute walk on a familiar route is perfect. Ask the walker to send a quick update afterwards — how your dog behaved, toilet breaks, anything unusual.
6. Give feedback
Tell your walker what went well and what you'd like done differently. After the booking is completed, a short review helps other dog owners and helps great walkers grow.
